Aligning Career Growth with Personal Priorities

Recently, we had the opportunity to work with a superintendent based in North Dakota who traveled extensively delivering data center projects. While he enjoyed the work and the scale of the projects he was involved in, the travel rotation wasn’t being followed as expected, meaning he wasn’t getting home to see his family in the Southeast as often as he had hoped.

At the same time, one of our clients, a $10B privately held GC and a major player in the data center market, was looking to strengthen their team on a large ground-up data center build in Louisiana for a major technology client. They needed an experienced superintendent who could step in and help support the execution of the project.

The candidate was earning $160K base salary in his previous role and ultimately accepted an offer at $175K base salary, along with an improved overall compensation package. More importantly, the move brought him significantly closer to home. While his family was based in Alabama, the project in Louisiana meant a much more manageable distance than traveling back and forth from North Dakota, allowing him to spend more time with his family and improve his overall work-life balance.

From the client’s perspective, they were able to bring on someone with a strong and well-rounded MEP background, a skill set that is critical on complex data center builds. Beyond technical ability, he also aligned well with the company’s culture and values.

His experience allowed him to contribute immediately on the project while also supporting and mentoring some of the more junior superintendents on the team.

Overall, it was a win-win outcome.

The candidate gained:

  • Increased compensation

  • Exposure to a larger and more complex data center project

  • Improved work-life balance and proximity to family

The client gained:

  • A highly experienced superintendent with strong MEP expertise

  • Someone able to add value immediately on a critical project

  • A leader who could support and mentor junior team members

Placements like this are a great reminder that the best outcomes in recruitment happen when the needs of the individual and the client align.
